Debra J. Slater is a founding Partner of Slater & Small PLLC. She is barred in the state of Florida since 2001 and Massachusetts since 1991. Ms. Slater is Board Certified by the Florida Bar as a Specialist in Elder Law. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Denver and her Juris Doctor from Nova Southeastern University—Shepard Broad Law Center.
Ms. Slater is the current Secretary of the Executive Committee of Elder Law Section of the Florida Bar. She currently serves as Chair of the Legislative Committee of the Elder Law Section of the Florida Bar and serves on the Joint Public Policy Task Force of the Elder Law Section. Ms. Slater is past co-chairperson of the Guardianship Committee and the Ethics Committee of the Elder Law Section of the Florida Bar and frequently lectures in the area of Elder Law Litigation and Legislation.
Ms. Slater deals with the unique issues that concern people as they age. This involves loss of mental capacity, guardianships, and the potential loss of control in one’s ability to handle their personal and financial affairs. She has been successfully handling these issues in South Florida since 2003. Ms. Slater is a zealous advocate who works to balance the needs of her clients with the expectations and concerns of family members. She also assists clients in creating their estate plans and handles both contested and uncontested probate and guardianship matters. Ms. Slater is clear that her “goal is to achieve all that is in my clients’ best interest as they navigate through difficult and emotional times.”
When she is away from the office, she enjoys traveling, competing in marathons, skiing, hiking, and spending time with her family, her dog Bodhi, and her cats.
